International
GEMA’s repertoire is used throughout the world. To make sure that our members receive remuneration for use of their music abroad, too, GEMA is linked with other collecting societies outside Germany in a network of so-called bilateral agreements, ensuring that rights on either side are both granted and exercised. Thanks to these, as a member you will receive payouts via GEMA for the use of your works outside Germany. To find out how we distribute licensing income in this area, see International.

New International Distribution Process from 1 April 2027
GEMA is modernising the processing and distribution of international revenues. From 1 April 2027, international distributions will be migrated to a new technical platform. The aim of this change is to further automate the processing of international revenues, reduce manual processing steps and make distributions more efficient and faster in the long term.
What will remain unchanged?
For you as a GEMA member, GEMA’s distribution rules will remain unchanged. Your international revenues will continue to be distributed in accordance with the applicable distribution rules.
What will change?
In future, the ownership shares documented at ICE (“Share Picture”) will serve as the central basis for identifying rights holders and applying the respective ownership shares. This will ensure that processing is based on consistent and up-to-date data. It will make distributions easier to understand and reduce the need for manual adjustments. Lump-sum payments from sister societies will be distributed in the form of a supplement rather than by directly increasing individual distribution items.
When will the change take effect?
The first international distribution using the new system environment will take place on 1 April 2027.
The new international distribution process lays the foundation for more modern and powerful processing of international revenues. For you, this means in particular:
-
consistent application of the ownership shares documented at ICE
-
greater transparency and traceability in processing
-
improved process quality
-
the prospect of more efficient and in some cases faster distributions in the future
During the implementation phase, subsequent corrections may still be necessary in individual cases. GEMA will keep you informed in good time about further developments and progress with the technical implementation.
